Resident Teacher-Scholar at Berea College’s bell hooks Center

Berea College, home of the new bell hooks center, invites teacher-scholars to apply for a one- to three-
year residency (11 months each year) to begin August 2021. Responsibilities include: teaching two to
three courses each year in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies or in Berea’s General Education
program; making feminism available, as dr. hooks writes, “for everybody,” by critically engaging dr.
hooks’s papers in the Berea College Special Collections and Archives, and by supplementing these
resources with personal interviews and other research focused on her works; and regularly sharing their
research with the campus community and beyond. The teacher-scholar will work closely with the center
Director and Chair of Berea College’s Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department to support
curricular alignment with dr. hooks’s teachings and center programming of national esteem. In addition,
the teacher-scholar will work with a postdoctoral fellow to organize the first two bell hooks center
symposia in Summer 2023 and Summer 2024. Required: a Ph.D. in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality
Studies or a related field; at least three years of post-graduate teaching experience; and a strong record
of scholarly publication. Experience with conference planning preferred. Appointment is for one year
with the possibility of renewal for one or two additional years based on satisfactory performance.

they might teach at Berea; their research program, including plans to engage dr. hooks’s work while at

Postdoctoral Fellow at Berea College’s bell hooks center

works in ways that advance their own research and scholarship, the fellow will take the lead in designing
and planning, in collaboration with the bell hooks Teacher-Scholar in Residence, two symposia to be
hosted by the bell hooks center in Summer 2023 and Summer 2024. The fellow will also provide overall
support to the center Director and Chair of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department,
while teaching two to three courses each year in the department or in Berea’s General Education
program. Required: completion of a Ph.D. in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies or a related field
prior to the beginning of the fellowship. Experience with conference planning preferred. Appointment is
for one year with the possibility of renewal for one or two additional years based on satisfactory

Adjunct Opportunity at Carleton College for grad students

Carleton College is looking for someone to teach 2-3 courses next year in the area of LGBTQ studies. More specifically, this person would teach Foundations of LGBTQ studies (an introductory level course) and 1-2 other courses of their choice (as long as they focused on LGBTQ studies). Assistant Editor position at Cultural Critique for AY 2021-2022

One position available: 25% PhD Candidate Graduate Research Project Assistant (9529) for AY 2021-2022 (with a start date of August 30, 2021 ­­and an end date of May 29, 2022) to work with the editors of the journal Cultural Critique (co-edited by Cesare Casarino, Maggie Hennefeld, John Mowitt, and Simona Sawhney). There is a possibility of continuation based on the needs of the journal, funding, and satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate must be a graduate student at the University of Minnesota who has achieved ADS status by the beginning of the Fall 2021 semester, meaning that s/he has finished all course work, passed preliminary examinations, and completed 24 thesis credits. Previous editorial experience is helpful.

Project assistants are responsible for submitting each issue of the journal to the University of Minnesota Press. Shared duties include formatting accepted essays, managing copyedited manuscripts, organizing proof corrections and advising authors on image copyrights. Other principle shared duties involve organizing the double-blind peer review process; communicating with authors and reviewers of submitted articles as well as with members of the editorial board and personnel at the Press; cataloguing submitted articles; responding to routine inquiries concerning the business of the journal and its companion book series; organizing monthly meetings of the journal’s editors; soliciting and adjudicating book reviews; and compiling a list of books received, to be published in each issue.

Please note that project assistants are required to fulfill their weekly duties throughout the entire semester, including university breaks (Winter/Spring). During the summer months, one project assistant position is available, at reduced hours (summer positions are not guaranteed and do not include fringe benefits).

Compensation: $23.88 per hour, plus fringe benefits, including tuition waiver (50% waiver @ 25% appointment). 25% appointment is for ten hours per week. Duties will be shared with a second project assistant, Dylan Mohr, who holds a 50% appointment for AY 2021-2022. Applicants must be registered graduate students of the University of Minnesota during the full term of employment.
